News ArticlesFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 25, 2006 Eureka Chamber Opposes T With 28% of Membership VotingEUREKA - The Eureka Chamber of Commerce took a formal position today in opposition to Measure T with only 28% of the membership casting ballots. If passed on June 6, Measure T would prohibit non-local corporations and organizations from making contributions to Humboldt County elections. "The overwhelming majority of businesses in Eureka do not belong to the Chamber of Commerce, and of those that do, less than a third responded to this survey," stated Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap, Campaign Manager for Measure T. "The survey tells us that the majority of their members do not have a position on Measure T. This confirms what we have been saying all along...the vast majority of local businesses do not participate in politics." Measure T does not apply to individuals and business owners would be able to continue making contributions as currently permitted by law. "The Chamber leadership - people like Chris Crawford - are trying to make Measure T into a partisan issue. They are trying to scare local business owners by spreading misinformation that Measure T will prohibit them from participating in the political process. Measure T has a specific exemption for local corporations and will not apply to individuals." said Sopoci-Belknap. The NOT campaign has charged Measure T with favoring one side of the political spectrum over another. "Our campaign is about protecting the people of Humboldt County - including local business owners - from large outside corporations who have tried to manipulate the political process for personal gain at the expense of our local democracy," stated Sopoci-Belknap. "We're confident that the majority of business owners in Humboldt County will stand up for the rights of all of us by voting yes on Measure T."
