(30 secs) | News ArticlesDemocracy Yes, Corporations NoEco News A new citizens group is proposing a county ordinance that would ban non-local corporations from contributing to any political candidate, campaign, referendum or recall. Responding in part to last year's attempted recall of District Attorney Paul Gallegos, which was financed primarily by the Texas-based owner of Pacific Lumber, the group homes to qualify the ordinance for next June's ballot. The measure is being spearheaded by the Humboldt Coalition for Community Rights, whose spokesperson, Yvonne Doble, said: "Our hope is to ensure local control over our elections." Another member, College of the Redwoods instructor Nezzie Wade, added: "Only people should have rights... Who do we want deciding the future of our county: the people who live here or outside corporations?" Doble added, "Maxxam/PL spent $250,000 to try to buy an election. They failed this time, but shouldn't we make sure that never happens again?" The group will begin to gather the approximately 5,000 signatures needed to qualify for the ballot once lawyers for the county approve the ordinance language. To contact the group, write to PO Box 1334, Eureka , CA 95502. |
