News ArticlesHashing It Out: Measure T the Topic of Times-Standard Webcast DebateJames Faulk, Times-Standard EUREKA — The first ever Times-Standard sponsored webcast debate features both sides of the initiative that seeks the ouster of non-local corporate money from local elections. The debate, featuring Campaign Co-Manager Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap of the Humboldt Coalition for Community Rights and No on T spokesman Chris Crawford, took on many aspects of the proposed initiative, which seeks to ban contributions from non-local corporations to local political campaigns. Moderated by Times-Standard editor Charles Winkler, questions were posed by both readers and a panel of journalists, including Kristian Leitzen of News Channel 3, Bob Doran of the North Coast Journal and James Faulk from the Times-Standard. “Measure T will protect local control of Humboldt County elections by prohibiting political contributions from non-local organizations, political action committees, unions and corporations,” said Sopoci-Belknap. “Measure T is a straightforward solution to a very real problem in our community.” But Crawford said the real issue is campaign finance reform, and Measure T does nothing to solve that problem. “Measure T is not a fair and straightforward solution,” he said. “The purpose of Measure T is to favor certain groups in the community over others as opposed to a straightforward solution to campaign finance reform.” |
