Fair Elections

Arcata Eye
July 12, 2005

Get Involved Today!A newly formed citizens' group, Humboldt Coalition for Community Rights (HCCR), last week handed in to the Humboldt County Elections Office a proposed county ordinance, the Humboldt County Ordinance to Protect Our Right to Fair Elections and Local Democracy. The ordinance prohibits any non-local corporation from contributing to any candidate campaign, referendum or recall in county elections. It also restricts corporations from claiming constitutional rights to justify their involvement in campaigns; since the 1970s, corporations have been able to claim First Amendment rights wen contributing financially to political campaigns.

The move comes in response, at least in part, to the 2004 attempt to recall District Attorney Paul Gallegos, which was financed largely by Maxxam Corporation and the Pacific Lumber Company.

Once county counsel approves the ordinance language, HCCR must gather almost 5,000 signatures to qualify the ballot for the June, 2006 election.

Contact HCCR at PO Box 1334, Eureka, CA, 95502.
