Newly Formed Group Seeking to Ban Campaign Contributions from Out of Area

Eureka Reporter
July 8, 2005

Get Involved Today! The newly formed group Humboldt Coalition for Community Rights is attempting to place a measure on the June 2006 ballot that would prohibit nonlocal corporations from contributing to any candidate campaign, referendum or recall in county elections.

The proposed ordinance, titled "Humboldt County Ordinance to Protect Our Right to Fair Elections and Local Democracy," would restrict "corporations from claiming constitutional rights as the basis for disqualifying non-local corporate participation in politics," a news release stated.

The Eureka-based group is responding in part to last year's attempted recall of District Attorney Paul Gallegos that was financed primarily by Maxxam Corp. and Pacific Lumber Co., a subsidiary of Maxxam, according to the release.

After the language of the ordinance has been approved by county counsel, the group plans to begin gathering signatures, said HCCR spokeswoman Yvonne Doble.

As of Wednesday, Deputy County Counsel Shelley Morrison said his office is not familiar with the proposed ordinance.

It will need just under 5,000 signatures in order to qualify for the ballot, the release stated.
